Staff Spotlight: Randy Hutton

In this months’ Tech Hub staff spotlight, we spoke with Randy Hutton about the innovative resources TechHUB offers to OSU students, the evolution of computers, and a great on-campus resource that all students should definitely check out.

What is your major?

I’m a business major specializing in finance.

What is your favorite thing about TechHUB?

I think that, speaking from the perspective of a student rather than an employee, the best thing about Tech Hub is the resources it provides to students. Be it the Oculus Rift, Google Glass, etc. I think there are a lot of resources for students to develop things in those mediums, which are normally too expensive for the average person to dive into.

Are there any new tech products/concepts that you are really excited about?

I’m really excited about the upcoming generation of computers. Now that laptops have essentially all moved to solid state storage, it’s going to be very interesting to see the race to the bottom in terms of size and compactness among manufacturers and the race to the top for battery life.

If you were only allowed one item of technology, what would you choose?

A high powered smartphone. There are smartphones that exist today that can be docked into full computers, so that would be my be-all and end-all solution if I was only allowed one piece of technology.

What is an OSU resource you wish you had known about as a freshman?

The Digital Union; they have so much software that you can use for free even if it isn’t for a particular class. You can just work on personal projects in there.

Fun fact about yourself?

I have my master’s scuba diving license!

Come stop by the store and say hi to Randy. While you’re in, check out the Oculus Rift and Google Glass, which are both part of the Student Developer Kit that students can borrow.
